The World of Olympic Sport
WSA is an idea born in Sept. of 2015 to address the failure of the existing world bodies to fairly, openly, and honestly administer our sport and provide for our athletes. After 11 decades of failure to become athlete-centered, the WSCA Coaches decided that it was time to develop something NEW.
The World Swimming Association’s purpose is to provide an organization for swimming that is
Athlete Centered, Administratively Transparent, and Professionally Managed.
The WSA is a sub-organization of the WSCA. For coaches who want to develop a swimming league, a non-FINA affiliated federation, or a competitive structure for schools or clubs, the WSA is available. The Constitutional Convention was in Washington, DC, in September 2017. Unlike existing organizations that tend to develop self-perpetuating permanent committees, the WSA operates with “Task Forces,” comprised of appropriate members, then disbanded when they complete their tasks.
The functions of the WSA, as decided at its convention, will be implemented by Professional Staff, with experience in competitive swimming.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The WSA is an idea born in September of 2015, to address the failure of existing world bodies to fairly, openly and honestly administer our sport and provide for the athletes. After 11 decades of failure to become athlete centered the Coaches of the WSCA decided that it was time to develop something NEW and ATHLETE CENTERED, TRANSPARENTLY MANAGED, and PROFESSIONALLY DIRECTED.
What will the WSA Include?
The WSA will ONLY deal with the sports of Pool and Open Water Swimming. We will assist with all levels from Learn-to-Swim, through Age Group, High School, Senior, University and International athletes.
Why am I asked to contribute membership funds?
Every organization needs operational funds. The WSA has professional staff that will need to be paid, as well as administrative costs. Just like the rest of the world, in that respect, no money, nothing happens.
Where does the money go?
Right now, all WSA membership dues and donations will be deposited into an account that will be audited as with all other 501(C)(3) organizations, by the United States Federal Government, as opposed to the Olympic organizations in Switzerland who have no federal requirement for any audit of proper expenditure of funds. (Hence the corruption that is rife in those organizations.)
Who are the key people forming the WSA?
The World Swimming Coaches Association is the parent organization of the WSA. Why? Because no one else can. No other international, independent body exists. The WSCA will govern its ongoing structure, as well. The World Open Water Swimming Association with its thousands of members and hundreds of existing open water events is the subject-matter-expert organization on Open Water Swimming.
As we said earlier, the WSA will be ATHLETE CENTERED. We’re all about creating the proper environment for competing athletes, of all ages.
Will the WSA run swim meets?
That will be the primary long-term role of the WSA. The two major requests from our members have been to train and certify swim schools and help our coach members establish swim leagues not affiliated with FINA (International Schools, youth leagues, international below the FINA-B level).
How Can I Join the WSA?
Simply sign up below for a nominal fee and become a Member. This will give you a voice in all things WSA. The key point is that you will make a CHOICE to join and not a presumptive assumption that if you are swimming, you automatically belong to something you never chose to join.
The WSA is a sub-organization of the WSCA. As such, the board of the WSCA is the governing body of the WSA.
The WSA is just one tool the WSCA uses to serve the various needs of its members, whether it is:
- coach education and certification,
- training camps for coaches and athletes,
- US college experience camps for those swimmers wishing to swim in a US college,
- developing swim leagues for international schools, age group or senior swimmers,
- and, most important, advocacy for coaches and athletes with international swimming’s governing bodies.
